August Online Workshop

Interactive Storytellers

Interactive Storytellers

Each day, creators learn new storytelling and Twine tools, then use them to build a playable story where the reader gets to choose what happens next. Creators will design original characters, settings, conflicts, and decision points, then connect story passages together to create different paths, outcomes, and endings. As they build, they will explore how writers use choice, suspense, pacing, and consequence to make stories feel exciting and interactive.

Weekly Breakdown

Week 1 - Story Starters

Creators are introduced to Twine and explore how choose-your-own-adventure stories work. They brainstorm their story world, main character, and central conflict, then begin building their first connected passages with simple choices.

Day 1 activity

Week 2 - Colorful Branching Paths

Creators expand their stories by adding new decision points, alternate scenes, and different routes for the reader to explore. Kids learn how to make choices feel meaningful by connecting decisions to consequences in the story. Additionally, they will learn how to add basic style elements to their stories.

Day 2 activity

Week 3 - Twists, Endings & Interactive Elements

Creators build out multiple endings, add suspenseful twists, and begin polishing their story structure. They may also experiment with optional interactive elements such as inventory items, hidden paths, conditional choices, images, or formatting effects.

Day 3 activity

Week 4 - Test, Polish & Showcase

Creators playtest each other's stories, check for broken links or confusing paths, and revise their writing for clarity and excitement. The session ends with a story showcase where creators share their interactive adventures and celebrate the many different paths their readers can take.
